The Utah State Aggies will host the # 8 BYU Cougars this Friday night in Logan. The Aggies are coming off of a bye week, which they surely needed in preparation for the Cougars, as the Aggies have not performed well against ranked teams this season. Utah State suffered beatings by the Oregon Ducks and the Utah Utes, and also lost to a tough UNLV team. The good side to all of this is they did win their last game against the Idaho Vandals 42-17, coupled with the home field advantage; the Aggies may get the push they need to hang with BYU.
The Aggies QB, sophomore Diondre Borel was 12-of-21 for 191 yards with 2 touchdowns, and he also rushed for 93 yards scoring one of his touchdowns on a 33 yard run. Redshirt freshman Robert Turbin ran for 123 yards as well in the Aggies win over the Vandals. However, the Aggies must diversify their attack outside of Borel’s game, as they will likely have a difficult time running against BYU’s stingy defense.
The BYU Cougars are literally shutting teams down. The Cougars last two contests were shutouts as they beat the UCLA Bruins 59-0 and Wyoming 44-0. The Cougars defense is currently on cruise control, and apparently not willing to allow teams score on them.
In the Cougars last game it was QB Max Hall once again leading the attack by tossing three touchdowns passes and accumulating 189 yards through the air. The highlight was a 62-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Austin Collie.
Not only will the Aggies be looking for the upset this weekend, but they will also be looking to snap the nations longest winning streak as BYU currently holds the streak at 14 consecutive games.
The last time these two teams hooked up in Logan was 2002 when the Cougars fell behind at the half by an astounding 27 points! The Cougars scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to win 35-34. You can almost sense a great battle come Friday just because of all the stipulations riding on the game, at least more pressure on BYU since they are undefeated, highly ranked, and running a streak. Man, maybe they should review the USC/Oregon game before they get on the plane/bus.
The Utah State Aggies have their hands full Friday and no one will disagree with that, but they might just catch a break if they can jump out early and put some pressure on the Cougars. Sometimes a bye week is good or bad, just ask the guys over at USC.
There’s nothing better than an in-state rival game. I’m always in the dog’s corner, but BYU is a tough team to bet against especially the way they have been handling teams on both sides of the ball. The Aggies will need a magic bullet this weekend if they intend to beat a team that has out scored their last two opponents 103-0! The only question this week is who will finally score against the Cougar’s defense? Now that sounds like a great side bet! Come on Aggies, prove to the nation that BYU is human; score!
Wilson’s Pick: I like BYU to win and cover. Good luck to ya!
