Late Saturday nightwell, late for us on the east coast, we will see a great showdown between the Boise State Broncos and the BYU Cougars. Both teams are 1-0 and both teams had some tough games this past week. Boise State hung on to beat Washington, while BYU pulled off a miracle that will probably go down as one of the top plays of the 2015 college season. Both teams are looking to get to 2-0 and keep their already slim dreams of a final four a potential reality.
Boise State will enter the game as three point favorites on the road over the BYU Cougars. The total points are set at 55 combined. Currently, this game is a mere toss up. Last I checked late last night, I saw that 52% of the action was on Boise State and 48% was wagered on BYU. This is without question going to be a close game and I see this one being in doubt in the final seconds.
In my opinion, if not for the injury to Taysom Hill, BYU would be the home favorite in this game. However, against Nebraska, Hill suffered a foot injury that will sideline him for the entire 2015 season, as well as end his college career. I do not normally talk about players character in these articles, but I want to send best wishes to Taysom Hill. He is a great kid that appears to be one of the few positive role models in the game today. Taysom, you have some great things ahead of you and I wish you the best! Okay, now back to the game at hand. Now that Hill is out for the season, freshman, Tanner Mangum will take over the reigns. Mangum has already made the play that he will be probably remember the most for the rest of his lifea 42 yard hailmary pass completion to Mitch Matthews as time expired against Nebraska. The offense of BYU will suffer losing Taysom Hill, but I believe the coaching and playcalling will be tailored to fit Tanner Mangums strengths. If BYU can play solid defense and take some pressure off their freshman, I think he can make enough plays to win this game. This is not the same Boise State of years past. This team is very beatable and they were nearly 0-1 barely hanging on against Washington just this past Saturday night. So in a nutshell, BYU needs to play defensegood/solid defense and keep the score as low as possible.
Boise State is 1-0 after hanging on to beat Washington 16-13 last Saturday and they now go on the road for another test. In their close win, Boise State was more of a running team than a passing team. Quarterback, Ryan Finley, went 16 for 26 passing for just 129 yards. He threw one pick and did not have a touchdown pass against the Huskies. The running game however, was rather solid. Jeremy McNichols led the way with 89 of the Broncos 185 total yards on the ground. McNichols also scored both of the Boise State touchdowns. If Boise State plans to beat BYU, they cannot be one dimensional. The offense will need a full on balanced attack in order to not only cover the spread, but win the game. If they find themselves only having success running the ball, they will soon not even be successful at that. Balance, balance, balance. That is Boises key to victory.
This is going to be a fun game to watch. Of course there are no real national title implications, but I still enjoy a hard fought close game and I think that is exactly what we will see here. I foresee a tight one and a late score pushes someone ahead for good. The public seems to like Boise State, but I think much of that is because of the injury to Taysom Hill and just the overall perception that Boise State has been the better program for the last decade. And that my friends is why I am taking the BYU Cougars. I think BYU pulls off another late win by a 23-20 score.
